Most entertaining 5 seconds from sub-par World Cup 2006 American commentators, during the England v. Paraguay match.
Dave O’Brien: “After Prince William made a surprise appearance at one of the England practice sessions, an England player said that the Prince was ‘a nice relaxed geezer.’”
[a few seconds of silence]
Marcelo Balboa: “What’s a geezer?”
O’Brien: “I don’t know. I was hoping you could help me with that.”
American English Translation: “geezer” = cool guy
After Beckham’s goal in the first 2 minutes (which was actually a Paraguay own goal), England didn’t seem like they wanted it enough, though they did seem to control the game for the most part. It wasn’t nearly as exciting a match as the opener between Germany and Costa Rica and England did not play like one of the favourites to win it all. After seeing England play in the Euro Cup two years ago, it seems that the England side usually step up the intensity when they need to against the better teams. Hopefully that will be the case against Sweden.
For now, England will take the 3 points!
The U.S. is up against the Czech Republic on Monday. Hopefully that match will feature European commentators.

I'm happy to see that my pre-cup pick to win it all, Holland, won their first match.
ReplyDeleteI hope the US can get our of their group, it looks very tough.
Argentina looked great, England looked subpar.....and even if Rooney comes back, how many goals did he score in qualifiers?

Okay, Aaron. So if you're going to pick a team to win it all, you gotta give us some rationale. What makes you think the Netherlands have what it takes?
ReplyDeleteRe: Rooney, I don't think England fans care about what he did in the qualifiers. They just want him to come through like he did in the last Euro Cup, minus the injuries.
here's my rationale for picking the Netherlands to win the World Cup:
ReplyDelete1)"I had a vision". I was living in Europe during the last Euro Cup. During the month of June, I was sharing a flat in San Sebastian with a surfer from Amsterdam, who turned me on to the Orange Footballers. It was during that infamous match in which Becham sailed his penalty kick into outer space that I had an epiphany......that Robert (my Dutch flatmate) would be celebrating a world cup victory in a couple of years. Maybe it was the Sangria, but my hunch felt very real.
2) Logic tells me that a team from Europe will win it on Euro soil. The Dutch are almost playing in their own backyard, and have huge fan support. The Dutch players will be right at home.
3) They have a good combination of youth and experience. I believe the young players will step up in the big games. They have their superstars (Cocu), sparkplugs (van Bronkhorst), goal scorers (Roben), good overall chemistry and coaching.
4) They have been overlooked by a lot of people.
5) I think Brazil will fall to somebody in the elimination rounds, and I believe the Dutch can outlast everybody else. If Brazil has to face The Czech Republic or the Italians after group play, I like one of the Euro teams' chances. I admit that Brazil on paper and from the last world cup is amazing, but I just don't think this is their year.
The United States got gang raped on the pitch today by Koller, Nedved, and the rest of the Czechs. It was really hard to watch. At least we can still be proud of David Hasselhoff and Jerry Springer.
